Taste Award-Winning Tasmanian Cider Among the Trees That Made It

off the press

Three gongs in 2026, and you can taste every one.

Gold. Silver. Bronze. We cleaned up at the 2026 Australian Cider Awards, with gold for our Sour Cherry, silver for our Apple Brandy, and bronze for our Kingston Black Barrel Aged. We are pretty chuffed, and we would love you to come and taste them.

Reading about it on a screen is one thing. Tasting it a stone’s throw from the trees it grew on is another. Come raise a glass to them at the Spreyton Cellar Door. Our family has been growing fruit on this land since 1908, and these awards are really a nod to five generations of getting their hands dirty.

If you are touring North West Tasmania, coming off the Spirit of Tasmania, or flying into Devonport, we are about 10 minutes down the road.

The awards we won:

  • Barrel Aged Kingston Black Cider: Bronze – Wood aged cider/perry
Three 2026 awards, one orchard. Taste award-winning Tasmanian cider and apple brandy at the Spreyton cellar door, 10 minutes from Devonport.

Our Sour Cherry took the Gold trophy for Best Specialty Cider or Perry with 94 points, meaning it was judged the best in its category, not just a medal winner. The Australian Cider Awards are run by Cider Australia, and this year more than 160 entries were judged across 36 classes. You can read about all the 2026 trophy winners here.

Shivam Tandon, our Beverage and Craft maker, shared his pride in the results:

These awards mean a lot to our whole team. We put so much care into every batch, from choosing the fruit to getting the balance and flavour right. To have our sour cherry take home a Gold trophy, alongside medals for our apple brandy and barrel aged kingston black, is something I am incredibly proud of.

Meet our winners

Sour Cherry: Gold, Best in Category

We grow cherries as well as apples, so a cherry cider was always going to happen. Our Sour Cherry blends tart Kentish and Lapin cherries with crisp Spreyton apple cider, finishing bright and zingy at an easy 3.5%. The judges gave it 94 points, and it is the one we would point you to first. Shop Sour Cherry cider.

Apple Brandy: Silver

Our Apple Brandy is one of our small batch spirits, made from our own apples and aged. It took silver in the aged apple or pear spirit category. Distilled in-house by our head cidermaker, then left for three years in an ex-port cask. The result is rich, complex, and a lot closer to a good whisky than you’d expect from an apple. Warm, layered, built to be sipped slow. Best enjoyed neat or over ice. For those who know what they like.

Barrel Aged Kingston Black: Bronze

Kingston Black is an old English cider apple, prized for balancing sharpness and tannin so well it can carry a cider on its own. We grow it here, and you can spot it among the varieties in our Cider Block. For this one we put the King in Hellyers Road ex-whisky barrels for six months and walked away. It came back richer and rounder, with a little warmth from the wood. Shop Kingston Black.

The orchard behind the awards

Every bottle starts on the trees straight outside our window. Spreyton has been a family orchard since 1908, and five generations later we are still growing apples and cherries on the same patch of North West Tasmania.

From the cellar door you look straight out over the orchard. Depending on when you visit, you will see blossom, fruit setting or trees heavy with apples ready for picking.

Apples are seasonal, so if you want to see fruit on the trees, aim for late summer into autumn.

That tree-to-bottle approach runs through our range: cider, hard drinks, Traditional Ginger Beer, juices, vinegars, natural sparkling waters and small-batch spirits like our Apple Brandy.
