Beyond Cider: How Spreyton Makes Real Tasmanian APPLE CIDER AND CHERRY Vinegar

off the press

Most people know Spreyton Cider Co for our award-winning ciders and hard ginger beer. What fewer people realise is that we also make vinegar.

Our Apple Cider Vinegar and Cherry Vinegar are made right here in Spreyton from fruit grown on the same family orchards that have been producing apples since 1908. Like everything else we do, the process stays close to the fruit and close to the land.

From orchard fruit to bottle

We grow the apples and cherries ourselves in the Mersey Valley, North West Tasmania. Once the fruit is pressed for juice or cider, some of it is set aside for vinegar. The juice is left to ferment naturally with the help of the yeasts and bacteria that live on the fruit and in the air around the orchard.

The vinegar is unpasteurised, unfiltered and undiluted. That means the “mother” the living culture that develops during fermentation, stays in the bottle. It can look a little cloudy or form a soft, jelly-like layer. That is normal. It is a sign the vinegar is still alive.

No shortcuts are taken. The vinegar is unpasteurised, unfiltered and undiluted. That means the “mother” – the living culture that develops during fermentation – stays in the bottle. It can look a little cloudy or form a soft, jelly-like layer. That is normal. It is a sign the vinegar is still alive.
The result is a vinegar with real depth. Our Apple Cider Vinegar is made from whole Tasmanian apples and naturally fermented for depth, smooth acidity and genuine orchard character. It has bright, clean apple notes with a gentle tang and rounded finish that works beautifully in dressings, marinades and everyday recipes

Our Cherry Vinegar is made from 100 per cent Tasmanian black cherries grown in our orchard. It delivers deep cherry richness with smooth, rounded acidity and a natural sweetness that gives it warmth and depth. It is ideal for cooking, dressings and marinades.

Why we make it this way

By keeping the vinegar raw and unfiltered, we preserve the full flavour of the fruit and the living culture that develops during fermentation. It is the same approach we take with our cider: let the fruit speak, keep the ingredient list short, and do the work on site in Spreyton.

How people use Spreyton vinegar

A good vinegar earns its place in the kitchen. Ours is used for:

  • Everyday salad dressings and marinades
  • Pickling vegetables
  • Adding brightness to sauces and stews
  • A splash in sparkling water or mixed drinks
  • Traditional folk uses such as a diluted morning tonic

Because it is made from real Tasmanian fruit and left unpasteurised, the flavour is fuller than many supermarket vinegars. A little goes a long way.

Taste it where it is made

You can buy Spreyton apple cider vinegar and cherry vinegar at our cellar door in Spreyton, just ten minutes from Devonport. While you are there you can also taste the full range of ciders, hard ginger beer and non-alcoholic drinks made from the same orchards.

Part of the same story

Cider, ginger beer, fresh juice and vinegar all begin in the same place: with fruit grown in our own orchards and carefully crafted from tree to bottle. Making vinegar is a natural part of what we do, allowing us to make the most of our fruit while creating another traditional product for the kitchen..

Visit the cellar door or order online and taste the difference that real orchard fruit makes.

Available in 500 ml bottles or cartons of twelve. Vegan friendly and gluten free.
