The Engineer Behind the Beverages at Spreyton
Rather than taking a typical student job, Shiv decided to focus on learning the craft of brewing and developing his understanding of fermentation science. That early curiosity has since grown into a career that blends rigorous technical knowledge with a deep appreciation for flavour and quality.
Today, Shiv is a qualified Chemical Engineer specialising in process engineering, bringing a highly analytical approach to beverage production. By carefully monitoring the chemistry, pH levels, alcohol content, sugar levels, and a whole lot more and maintaining strict batch consistency, he helps ensure every Spreyton product delivers the quality customers expect.
From Beer to Apples: The Science Stays the Same
While many people know Spreyton for its award-winning Tasmanian craft cider, the company has evolved into a diverse Tasmanian beverage producer. Its range now includes cider, ginger beer, ready-to-drink beverages, sparkling non-alcoholic drinks, sparkling waters, and juice products, all crafted with the same attention to detail.
The transition from brewing beer to working with apples and other fruits, and to broader beverage production, was a natural progression for Shiv, driven by his passion for fermentation and flavour development. Although the raw ingredients may differ, the science remains the same: yeast converting natural sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
At Spreyton, that process begins with whole real fruit. This approach allows the natural flavour and character of the Tasmanian fruit to remain at the centre of every beverage. Using orchard-grown produce rather than concentrates or artificial additives is a deliberate choice that sets the company’s products apart in a crowded market.
Engineering Precision Meets Premium Produce
For Shiv, combining engineering precision with premium Tasmanian produce is what helps set Spreyton apart in the growing craft beverage industry. His background in chemical engineering and process engineering means every stage, from fruit pressing and fermentation through to final packaging, is monitored with scientific rigour.
This focus on consistency and quality control is especially important as Spreyton continues to expand its range of craft RTD beverages and non-alcoholic options. Whether it’s a classic dry cider, a spicy ginger beer, or a refreshing sparkling water, the goal remains the same: deliver products that taste true to their origins and perform reliably every time.
A Story of Curiosity, Science, and Tasmanian Flavour
Shiv’s path, from experimenting with homebrewing in a student dorm to overseeing production at one of Tasmania’s respected cider and beverage producers — highlights how technical skill and genuine passion can shape the modern craft beverage landscape.
At Spreyton, that combination of fermentation science, process engineering, and a commitment to whole-fruit ingredients continues to drive the creation of distinctive Tasmanian craft cider and a growing family of beverages that celebrate local produce.
The result is a range of drinks that reflect both the natural character of Tasmania’s orchards and the careful, science-backed approach that turns fruit into something special in every glass.
