Cool, Calm and Cooking Local at Spreyton

A different kind of kitchen culture

Head Chef Josh Cox, has one clear rule for the kitchen at Spreyton Cider Co: stay cool, calm and collected. He learned the importance of that rule early in his career.

As a young apprentice, Josh experienced a kitchen culture where mistakes were often met with criticism rather than guidance. The tense environment taught him an important lesson about the type of leader he wanted to become.

When Josh had the opportunity to lead his own kitchen, he chose to build a culture based on respect, trust and clear communication. He believes people perform at their best when they feel supported, understand what is expected and have the confidence to learn from mistakes.

Josh leads by example. During a busy service, he remains calm, focused and approachable. His steady presence helps the team communicate clearly, work together and manage pressure without losing confidence.

That leadership style remains consistent, even during a busy Friday night. Josh guides the team through each stage of service, keeping everyone focused until the final dessert leaves the kitchen.

Inspired by the orchard

The calm atmosphere inside the kitchen reflects the landscape outside it.

Spreyton Cider Co sits beside a working family orchard near Devonport. Josh watches the apple trees move through every stage of the season, from bare branches to fruit-filled trees.

That connection naturally influences the food.  Apples from the Spreyton orchard are used to create sauces, juice reductions and rich apple molasses. Spreyton cider is also finding its way into more dishes.

For Josh, using Spreyton products in the kitchen makes sense. Guests can see the orchard, taste the cider and experience those same flavours on their plates.

Supporting Tasmania, one plate at a time

The orchard is only the beginning of Spreyton’s local food story.

Josh is committed to supporting Tasmanian farmers, growers and suppliers wherever possible. He works with local Spreyton businesses to source Tasmanian fresh produce.

Buying local is a deliberate choice. He believes the food served at Spreyton should represent the region, support the people who produce it and give visitors a genuine taste of Tasmania.

Every local ingredient helps strengthen the network of farmers, growers, butchers and food businesses across the state. It keeps money and jobs within Tasmanian communities and helps local producers continue doing what they do best

When visitors eat at Spreyton Cider Co, they are not only supporting our fifth-generation family business. They are also supporting the Tasmanian people and businesses behind every plate.

Find the perfect drink for your meal

The Spreyton cellar door offers much more than cider. Along with our award-winning Tasmanian cider range, visitors can enjoy craft beer, spirits, ginger beer, non-alcoholic drinks and fresh apple juice made from Tasmanian apples.

A tasting paddle is a great way to explore the range and discover something new before choosing a drink to enjoy with your meal. Our cellar door team can also recommend a drink that complements the flavours on your plate

Drivers, non-drinkers and younger visitors are well catered for, with a wide range of refreshing alcohol-free options available. Whatever is on your plate and whatever you prefer to drink, there is something for everyone at Spreyton.

Food that belongs at Spreyton

Visitors may not see everything happening behind the kitchen doors, but the care and thought behind every dish can be tasted.

Josh has created a calm, respectful kitchen where quality matters, with team members Matt and Noah.  Ingredients are chosen carefully, local producers are supported, and the working orchard remains at the heart of the menu.

This is not food that could be served anywhere. It is shaped by the seasons, the orchard and the growers, farmers and producers of North West Tasmania. It is food with a genuine connection to the place where it is prepared.

It is food that belongs at Spreyton.
